Blue Hills

October 21, 2008
Mindi had a doctor's appointment this day and JC had to work so I went hiking in the Blue Hills Reservation.  It is just a little ways south of Boston and was one of the first areas set aside for public recreation in 1893.  The highest elevation in the hills is Great Blue Hill at 635 feet.  And the trailhead elevation near the Reserve Headquarters is about 200 feet.  But getting to Big Blue Hill and back via the Skyline Loop Trail was three miles of steep ups and downs and I figured it added up to over 1,000' elevation gain and loss, gain and loss, gain and loss, gain and loss...  You get the idea.  There are five hills along the route (Hancock, Hemenway, Wolcott, Great Blue, and Houghton) and since they don't seem to believe in switchbacks on the East Coast the trail went straight up and down very rocky hillsides on each...   By the end of the loop my knees were saying enough already!  Anyway, I had fun and enjoyed all the fall colors and the gorgeous views of Boston :)

A few trails, if they look steep, rocky, and a little hard to discern that's because they are!
Yep, these are trails!
That's Great Blue Hill and the half-way point of my hike
