T's first Backpack Trip on the PCT

June 15-16, 2015
I figured it was about time for T's first adventure on the PCT.  So our
friend Albert joined us and we picked an easy overnight trip with great
views, wildflowers, and water.  Little Jimmy Camp is a beautiful campsite
along the PCT in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.  It has a
year-round spring nearby.  It was 2.2 miles with 800' elevation gain to
camp.  There we ate lunch, set up our tents, played frisbee, took a nap,
then dayhiked up to Mt. Islip, another 1.2 miles and 800' up.  I had set
out to
hike this mountain once, but didn't make it to the very top.  It was
nice to finish it, and I had a great time seeing my son enjoy the journey
He got to sign his first peak register :)  He loved seeing all the squirrels
and chipmunks.  And there were tons of lizards along the trail.  In fact I
think this must be the chipmunkiest and lizardiest trail I've ever hiked!
He also had a great time eating all the M&M's in the trail mix, pointing
out all the baby trees, and seeing the stone summit shelter on Mt. Islip.
T really liked the old stone summit shelter - this
was a fire lookout once upon a time
That's Mt. Wilson in the distance
frisbee is a great toy for camp
Ground squirrel on an old CCC-era stove - I love these,
I've also seen them at trail camps in the
Chantry area,
they're stamped "USFS" on the front
