Middle Fork Trail

Cucamonga Wilderness
April 3, 2010
Greg, Sonya, Sonya's friend Kathy, and I hiked up the Middle Fork Trail into Cucamonga Wilderness on Saturday.  This is one of my favorite local trails and I've hiked it a few times before, but the others hadn't.  Even though I'd been up here before, I had never scrambled all the way up to the waterfalls that are near the Third Stream Crossing campsite.  Last time I was up there we weren't entirely comfortable scrambling over rocks so we didn't go far up the steep-walled gorge where the falls are.  This time I found out that it is totally worth the extra effort, though, because they are beautiful this time of year - tons of water rushing down!  The flowers are also starting to bloom at these elevations and we saw three snakes - a baby rattler, a garter snake, and one more that disappeared before we could ID it.  No bighorn sheep, though I know they're up there.  But we did hear Canyon Wrens as we were hiking and saw only two other hikers the entire day.  In all it was a fabulous day :)
