Momyer Trail to Alger Creek

May 2, 2009
My friend Sonya, whom I met through the So Cal Hikers Group, and I hiked up the Momyer Trail to Alger Creek on Sunday.  It is about 3 miles up to the San Gorgonio Wilderness Boundary, then another mile to the creek.  Total round-trip mileage is about 8 miles with 2,000' elevation gain then loss.

Turns out the guy we saw at the trailhead was Rayestrella - I had met him once before but didn't recognize him!  The first part of the trail goes down to Mill Creek which was running high and there were no conveniently placed rocks to hop across - so we ended up just taking off our boots and socks and wading across.   It was warm and sunny, but fortunately there are some cool shady spots along the trail and a cool breeze was blowing.  I had heard the trail is very exposed, but was pleasantly surprised by the shade - it was more than I expected - more than enough to rest in as you're hiking up the steep parts. But I still wouldn't start hiking this trail during the heat of the day, rather the morning when it's cooler.  The trail is easy enough to follow, but there are two trees down across it - one you can walk around near the Wilderness boundary, and one you need to crawl over on the trail that drops down to Alger Creek.

There are some spots in the mile before the creek that are quite narrow with a steep and long dropoff, but most hikers should be okay.
We enjoyed the small spring about 1/4 mile before the creek.  The water seeps out from under a huge Ponderosa Pine tree and it's cool and mossy underneath.  There are also some huge Incense Cedars in the area.
The creek was absolutely beautiful and we ate lunch there before heading back   We only saw 4 others on the trail - two backpackers heading down and two day hikers heading up.  Saw several flowers blooming including Indian Paintbrush, Western Wallflower, Yucca, and Blue Dicks.  Saw lots of birds, squirrels, and lizards.  And the views speak for themselves...
