Stagg Tree


The Stagg Tree, the 5th largest tree in the world, grows in the Alder Creek Grove, part of which is on Forest Service Land and part on private land.  The tree itself is on private land but the current owners allow public access.  To get to the trailhead take Hwy 190 east of Camp Nelson about 3 miles then make a left on Redwood Drive.  Take this road until you reach the community of Sequoia Crest.  Just before the road makes a U-turn, you'll see a small parking area for the Stagg Tree Trail.  Look for the signs and it isn't too hard to find.  It is about a 3/4 mile hike to the Stagg Tree.  You can also do this trail in the wintertime with snowshoes or cross-country skiis.  I've been there three times in the winter and once in early summer on a cool foggy day when the dogwoods are blooming.  Here are the photos from that visit...
